The 67-year-old mother of Mr Ecclestone's wife Fabiana Flosi, was reportedly kidnapped in Brazil by criminals demanding a ransom of $36.5m (£28m), reports say.

Aparecida Schunck the mother of Ecclestone's wife, Fabiana Flosi, was captured in Sao Paulo on Friday night, according to Brazilian news magazine, Veja.

There haven't been any comment from police in the City yet.

Formula 1 boss Ecclestone, age 85, is the UK fourth richest person and is one of the most powerful men in sport and is worth an estimated $3.1bn (£2.4bn).

He married Ms Flosi in 2012, three years after meeting the now 38-year-old at the Brazilian Grand Prix. He divorced his former wife of 25 years, Croatian model Slavica Radic, to be with her and they live in the UK but Fabiana's mother continues to live in Sao Paolo.

£27.8 million is the largest ransom ever demanded by Kidnappers in Brazil, a country where the rate of crime especially kidnapping and robbery has sky-rocketed in the last one year.

The kidnappers have demanded the ransom, a record amount for an abduction in Brazil, be paid in pounds sterling and divided into four plastic bags of cash, Veja reported.

Kidnapping was common in Brazil a decade ago, with Sao Paulo experiencing an abduction every 27 hours in the year 2002, but there was an decline after police formed a special anti-kidnap division and cracked down.

The country, due to host the Olympic Games in under two weeks, is encountering its worst economic crisis for quite a long time.

Mr Ecclestone and His wife has not commented on the reports.
